What does Islam Say about Hijab?
The Order of Hijab
The Quran and Hadith describe the importance and freedom of a woman. Allah has set some rules for both women and men. Likewise, the order of hijab in Islam is given to both men and women but from different perspectives.
Allah said in the holy Quran, verse 16:44, surah al-Nahl.
[We sent them] with clear proofs and written ordinances. And We revealed to you the message [i.e., the Qur’ān] that you may make clear to the people what was sent down to them and that they might give thought.
The order of covering the body applies to women, whereas giving respect and keeping the eyes bowed in front of women that are not family applies to men in Islam.
Rewards of hijabi women in Islam
Islam is beautiful, and Allah (The most glorified, the highest) is so merciful that he rewards us for the smallest of things. He rewards us for smiling at others, for offering a kind word, for helping someone out.
Have you ever thought of the reward you will receive if you sacrifice your desires- the compensation for your hardships and obedience- for your hijab?
We should not get disheartened by the cruel taunts of people. Focus on the rewards Allah will shower on you. Focus on the beautiful paradise you are creating with every moment you wear your hijab- a paradise more beautiful than anything in the world. If you focus on that, hearing the insults of people wouldn't bother you the slightest bit.
Whenever someone taunts you for following your Islam or obeying Allah, if you endure- if you have patience- Allah will reward you. A reward for every insult. How does that sound? It makes you want to get insulted.
Whenever you suppress your desire to take off your hijab and lay back as other women do, you get a reward.
You get a bonus for it. Just imagine how much you will be blessed and rewarded in the world and Afterlife.
Being a Muslim, it’s our biggest wish to please Allah, enter heaven, meet Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), and see our beloved creator.
By obeying Allah and Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) and hijab, all these wishes can be fulfilled.
What more can a Muslim ask for?
Quranic verses on hijab:
And those older women who have no hope for marriage, there is no sin on them if they take off their (extra) clothes while they do not display their adornment. Still, that they refrain (even from this) is better for them. Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers that they should draw down their shawls over them. That will make it more likely that they are recognized, hence not teased. And Allah is Most-Forgiving, Very-Merciful.
Hadith on hijab:
Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 4481. The following version was narrated by Abu Dawood (4102)
It was narrated from Safiyyah bint Shaybah that ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) used to say: When these words were revealed – “and to draw their veils all over Juyoobihinna (i.e., their bodies, faces, necks, and bosoms)” – they took their izaars (a kind of garment) and tore them from the edges and covered their faces with them.
It was narrated that ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) said: “The riders used to pass by us when we were with the Messenger of Allaah (S) in Ihraam, and when they drew near to us we would lower our jilbabs from our heads over our faces, then when they had passed we would uncover them again.
Narrated by Abu Dawood, 1833
It was narrated that Asma’ bint Abi Bakr said:
We used to cover our faces in front of men.
